Steady and productive is the best way to describe the Lake Michigan Milwaukee salmon fishing. Chinooks of all sizes with four year old Chinook averaging 15 pounds. Rainbows and Lake Trout are plentiful when fishing with all presentation. Shore anglers are having a rough go of it with cloudy water from recent rain run off. Some recent east wind has not changed the location or depth of fish. Very good action in working 40 to 80 feet of water in White Fish Bay three to seven miles north of Milwaukee’s north gap. Let me tell you where and what to use. To see my how to video fish report go to http://www.jimhirt.com
With 59 degree surface temperature 2,3,4,5,6 and 8 color lead core are working. Travel northeast out of the North Gap about 3 miles at a 50 degrees compass for the cold water that holds the fish. Look for fish from 10 to 60 down on all presentations. Slide Divers with 70 feet of line out are a steady producer with magnum Reaper Peacock or Fish n Chip spoons. Glow spoons have also been working all day long in the magnum size like the Reaper Fish Fry. Downriggers from 40 to 65 down on long lead spoons are my go to rig with magnum silver or glow spoons. Customers are enjoying great action on Chinook salmon to 20 pounds. A combination of Salmon and Trout in all sizes are active. The boat speed of 2.1 gave the best results. Vulcans, Nestor Wobblers and Reapers are sold only on the web at http://www.badgertackle.com Have a great fishing season. Let’s go fishing!! Jim charters out of Milwaukee, WI. with Blue Max Charters. Early May fishing has been medium at best. We’re taking a mixed bag of Chinooks, Coho and Brown Trout. You may target your species by working the temps the fish like. The Milwaukee harbor and gaps are holding the best Brown Trout fishing. This warm water fish is finding the best temp where the water flows out of the harbor. All size spoons in orange and silver are working also the Nestor Wobbler Sun Burn Glow has been a regular producer. Coho are north and south in 30 to 50 feet of water in the top 15 feet. No big numbers on Coho yet but this should improve in the next week. Orange 6 inch flashers or dodgers with green Johnny flies are my go to bait for Coho. There has been a morning and evening bite on the big Kings. Mid day is when we are catching most of our Coho and smaller Browns. On the early and sunset bite bigger spoons and plugs have produced fish. The Vulcan Silver, Reaper Magnum Peacock or J-plugs #3 silver and some fish on glow spoons in the larger sizes are working for kings. Downriggers 14 -24 down and Slide Divers at 10 to 20 feet have been best. I hear some of the boats have been out in deeper water but the water inside of 50 feet has worked for us. The boat speed of 2.2-2.5 gave the best results. Vulcans, Nestor Wobblers and Reapers are sold only on the web at http://www.badgertackle.com Have a great fishing season. Let’s go fishing!! Hot Lures For Salmon

In previous articles we covered where to start if you have not been out for awhile. In this article I would like to help you with what lures to buy at the tackle store for a typical July or August trip on Lake Michigan. This is a very difficult question. Where I cannot possibly go into all species and all situations, perhaps I can define what I believe will catch fish 90 percent of the time. Please keep in mind that the best lure not properly presented will not catch fish. Milwaukee is known for excellent Chinook salmon fishing, so I will focus on salmon. If I were to run just one lure day in and day out and consistently catch fish, it would be a flasher and fly. Flashers come in dozens of colors and sizes. The one I would select would be an 8-inch Luhr Jensen green with silver and glow tape with a green fly. The length of the leader from the flasher to the fly should be give or take 25 inches. I measure from the end of the hook to the back of the flasher. This measurement may change day to day. The length of the leader will affect the speed of the fly movement. The bigger Chinooks may require a longer leader. My number two choice would be two different spoons. For first light fishing I like a Reaper Magnum Fish Fry Glow. This spoon has put more fish in the cooler than any other spoon I run. The other spoon I like is a Vulcan Magnum or Regular Silver with blue and green accent both are available at badgertackle.com. Use this lure when fishing in over cast situations or below fifty feet down. Run a spoon on your dipsey and flasher flies on your downriggers. A simple and very effective way to produce fish on calm days with clear skies is to run just two spoons. The lead from the spoon to the downrigger should be one hundred fifty feet. This presentation will not allow tight turns. When the morning bite stops, go long to continue catching fish. Good Luck Captain Jim. Let’s go fishing!!
