Milwaukee Fishing Lake Michigan Salmon Report 5/25/2015

Milwaukee Fishing Lake Michigan Salmon Report 5/25/2015
By Milwaukee Wisconsin fishing charter Captain Jim Hirt
Small But Steady Improvement In Fishing Milwaukee!
Harbor and gap fishing good to slow for Brown Trout with a few small Chinook. Small spoons or crank baits best bait in the harbor. Badger Tackle Reaper or Vulcan spoons getting it done in the regular size. To get my fish reports and how to videos first go to http://www.jimhirt.com By subscribing you will keep ahead of the other anglers. When I post you will get it fast by e-mail!
How Chinook
Harbor and gap Chinook are coming first light on Vulcan or Reaper regular combinations of green/silver, all silver and blue/silver. My first choice is first light with glow spoons. The spoons are best when run 100 feet behind the downrigger ball and 26 feet down. There are also Chinooks being taken in 65 feet of water in White Fish Bay 45 down to the bottom. The only place you will find Reaper and Vulcan spoons is on my web site at http://www.badgertackle.com
How Lake Trout
Action for Lakers has been the best bet for fish in the cooler. Try long lead spoons and SWR rigs 45 to 60 feet down. Lead cores are also a good choice. Best action has been in 65 feet.
How Coho
Some scattered reports of Coho being caught. The surface is 49 degrees and they will be here in numbers soon.
Rainbow Trout
If you have time and good lake conditions try 250 feet of water for good action on trout. Vulcan OL Sherbet Orange spoons on 2,3,4, color lead core best.
Where!
Fish are mixed up and scattered. Fish the entire water column in 20 to 100 feet of water for the best action. Our best speed was 2.0 to 2.2 mph measured at the ball with the Depth Raider.
Have a great fishing season. Jim charters out of Milwaukee, WI. with Blue Max Charters. He can be reached at 414-828-1094 or visit his web site at http://www.bluemaxcharters.com Copyright© 2015, James J. Hirt, All Rights Reserved.

Questions
Should you have a question please e-mail me from my Blue Max website contact us page. Read all my articles and see video fish reports at http://www.jimhirt.com

What to do in Milwaukee
Shopping abounds for the ladies who prefer not to fish. Excellent dining, in all price ranges, will make your family outing complete. The Milwaukee Visitor Bureau 800-554-1448 is a great source of information.

How many
Wisconsin has a generous daily bag limit on Lake Michigan.
You may keep five total of salmon or trout over ten inches. Possession limit is two daily limits. You may use three rods per person.

Let’s catch a limit
I would like to share with you some of my keys to finding fish and the hottest set ups for very early presentation. I start my season in early April and the most important factor at this time is temperature. I recommend launching at McKinley. When you come out of the marina, stay inside the break wall. This area is well protected and is always fishable. Proceed south about one mile to the mouth of the river. The best early action will be where the warm river water meets the colder water. The mouth of the river and harbor breakwall gaps is where you want to fish.

Presentation
The most active species will be salmon and Brown Trout in the 5 to 12 pound class with many limit catches. Motor trolling is the method I use for most of my fishing, and I will explain one of my basic spring setups. I fish all my lines on planner boards with twenty-pound test line. Use a six foot leader 3/8-ounce keel sinker twenty feet behind the board. I recommend a boat speed of 2.0 M.P.H. Run small crank baits, medium size jointed minnow type lures and bright colored spoons. The color of the lure is dictated by the amount of light and water color. On most days in clear water I use white and black or silver lures. Hotter colors work best in cloudy water. You can’t go wrong with chartreuse in both conditions. The new Badger Tackle Vulcan glow in the dark lures sold at http://www.badgertackle.com are an excellent option call me I will help you pick some of my favorites. Good luck Captain Jim. How Coho
The rainy days continued this week. This has kept many anglers off the lake. When we can get out we caught Coho in the top 35 feet on 6-inch flashers or OO dodgers with Howie peanut, flies tied 14-16 inches long. The Coho are not all that picky on color most green or blue Howie flies will work. The majority of the fish are Coho for most anglers. Our best presentation is Yellow Bird planer boards with 25 foot leads behind the boards.
How Chinook
Chinook are coming on magnum spoons run long behind the downrigger ball. Slide divers are working set to #2 with 80 feet of line out. Reaper Magnum and Vulcan Magnum spoons in blue/green or silver/ green on the leadcores are taking Chinooks and Lake Trout 8 to 15 pounds. Leadcore in 4,5,6, and eight colors are the best for kings. The only place you will find Reaper and Vulcan spoons is on their web site at http://www.badgertackle.com
Where!
Water temperatures near shore warmed to 52 degrees on the surface and Coho fishing was good in 30 to 50 feet of water. Start your trip in close to shore for Coho and go to 70-110 feet of water for Chins and Lake Trout. Fish the top 50 feet for the best action. More anglers are finding Chinook action north of Milwaukee in Whitefish Bay. Our best speed was 1.7 to 2.0 mph measured at the ball with the Depth Raider.
